1. Make the effort

Always dress well to give a good impression.  Smart casual is good for a first date.  Guys – wear a shirt rather than a t-shirt.  Girls – wear something feminine and make sure you’re not showing too much cleavage or tummy.  Wear a little makeup to enhance your natural features.

2. Be positive

No-one wants to go on a date with a grouch.  Think of some topics beforehand that you can talk positively about.

3. Listen

We all love to be listened to.  Don’t think that you have to talk to impress the other person – this may just bore them stiff!  You can really find out about the other person by listening which will help you gauge whether they might right for you.

4. Be open minded

Research shows that even in successful partnerships, individuals didn’t always hit it off on the first date.  Unless you really don’t think there’s any connection, persevere and meet a second or third time.  People can often be nervous on a first date and you don’t get a true picture of them.  Give them another chance and you might be pleasantly surprised.

5. Follow up

If you’d like to see someone again let them know.  Often we leave it to the other person to get in touch and when they don’t we think it’s because they’re not interested.  They may be waiting to hear from you!  Guys particularly – let a girl know you want to see her again, this will flatter her and she’ll be more likely to say yes.
